This season is all about change, which means strong colors and strong haircuts are in style. People are looking for change – not just any change but a head-turning change. Blondes are in this season, and pale blonde – also known as platinum or white blonde – is playing an especially important role in the trend. Pale blonde, being the strongest of blondes, is what makes it so attractive.
Pale Blonde’s Rise to Popularity
The social environment plays a big important role in what fashion looks like. People have been feeling very unsure about the future for a very long time and I think the future is looking brighter for them so they’re getting ready for that; they want that change. And someone who’s going for that head-turning experience, someone confident who wants to be striking, that’s the attitude of the woman who’ll go for pale blonde this season.
The color blonde also has the connotation of summer, of being sun-kissed and exposed to the sun, almost evoking the sun. And I think that’s why light blondes are the popular color this season rather than in the winter.
Accents and Hues
The trend of showing roots on blondes is already fading; we won’t be seeing that by the end of the summer. Instead, you’ll see the merge of other colors. At Intercoiffure, my team and I did a presentation on adding metallics to the blonde, which was a big hit at the presentation. Adding these metallic hues such as silver and gold (rose gold is my favorite) creates a little bit of dimension and depth to the pale blonde color.
Finding the Right Tone of Blonde
Going lighter is really decolorizing your hair. The hair can either become lighter in one-shot or go light gradually over several sessions. But whether it’s a buttery, warmer or cooler tone, the tonality of the blonde plays a really important role with your skin tone and eye colors. Generally, the rule of thumb is that light skin tones and light hair don’t go well together, and you can’t go two tones lighter than your natural hair color. But if a colorist is well-trained, experienced and knows what they’re doing, they can make the pale blonde color match the tonality of your skin and eyes without compromising the integrity of your hair. So you can see people with olive complexion and blonde hair when they have naturally dark hair.
Before coloring the client’s hair, it’s important to know the history of the hair and to know the client, such as what products they use, what’s been done to the hair, and how the hair responds to different treatments. With that consultation, I’m able to tell the client if going light is possible or not. Obviously, not everybody can get the pale blonde look, but a lot of people can more than they think they can.
