Behind the Shears Part 1: The Roots of Salon Buzz

Salon Buzz first opened its doors in 1998, and since then, it’s been an amazing journey owning my own salon. Looking back, I can’t believe how much the salon has evolved and grown in the past 13 years.

I was fortunate enough to work for some great salons throughout my career – opportunities of which I’m grateful and thankful – but I always knew that there was something missing: the feeling of being part of one big group moving towards a common vision. From what I witnessed, the typical salon culture was that everybody was for only himself or herself. And I didn’t believe I could create something dynamic if everyone only takes care of their own selves rather than caring for the business as a whole. I believed in togetherness and common training, where people spoke the same language of hairdressing as a serious craft.

Early on, I realized the importance of having a leader who would drive others and motivate them to keep moving forward. I had these figures throughout my career, but in very short spurts. Within the industry, I also noticed that training programs were cut short because people wanted to put more hairdressers on the floor. Without proper training to really cultivate the craft, these young hairdressers were unable to deliver the quality of work that the client expected.

Seeing these shortcomings in the industry, I seized the opportunity to create something different. I wanted to create an environment where people could grow and prosper, where they would feel like they always belonged. And that’s when I formed the vision to create a strong culture of togetherness, headed by a strong leader who truly believes in the craft of hairdressing and is equally passionate about passing along the craft to aspiring hairdressers.
